We carried out DFT calculations to study molecular hydrogen formation from H atoms with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecular cations as possible catalysts. PAHs chosen are naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and coronene. This type of reaction consists of two processes: addition of an H atom to a PAH cation and abstraction of the H atom by another H atom. Since such processes require little activation energy, it seems likely that such reactions occur in very cold interstellar space. |
