Call for Application

The 2010 Young Distinguished Scientist Awards of the Japan Society for Molecular Science

The Japan Society for Molecular Science (JSMolSci) presents “Young Scientist Awards of the Japan Society of Molcular Science” (hereafter referred to as the Award) to young JSMolSci members in recognition of their achievement of the highest quality research in the field of molecular science.

1. Eligibility
Applicants for the Award must fulfill the following conditions:

1) Be a member of JSMolSci for at least one year on September 1, 2010.
2) Be younger than 39 years of age on September 1, 2010.
3) Have previously presented at least three times as the first author at the Annual Symposium on Molecular Structure and Dynamics and/or the Annual Meeting of the Japan Society for Molecular Science.
4) Not have previously received the Award.

Non-members of JSMolSci may not apply for the Award this year. We encourage young scientists to join JSMolSci.

2. Application Documents
Please prepare the following documents.

Information on the Nominee. (Required either when nominating himself/herself or when making a nomination on another’s behalf.)

2) Title of research followed by a brief CV of the applicant (PDF format)
*Should include the name, date of birth, education, professional experience, contact telephone number, fax, and email address of the applicant.

3) Research summary (PDF format)
*Should start with the title of the research, name, and affiliation of the applicant. The summary of the research should follow. The summary should not exceed two A4 pages.

4) List of publications (PDF format)
*Should include original papers, review papers, invitation lectures, and presentations at international conferences.

5) Reprints of two representative papers (PDF format)

6) Abstract of three first-author presentations at the Symposium on Molecular
Structure and Dynamics and/or the Annual Meeting of the Japan Society for Molecular Science (PDF format)

7) Letter of recommendation (required only when recommending someone else) (PDF format)

Prepare document (1) as a TXT file and documents (2) to (6) (or (2) to (7) when recommending someone else) as a single PDF file as follows. Name each file with applicant’s name as [Initial of first name]_[Last name]_[Submitted document]. If Taro Bunshi applies for the award, the file names would be:
     t_bunshi_appl.txt, for document (1)
     t_bunshi_shourei.pdf, for documents (2)-(6) (or (2)-(7)).

3. Submission
Send the two files mentioned in “2. Application Documents” by email to bunshi-shourei@bunken.co.jp during the application period for presentations of the Annual Meeting of the Japan Society for Molecular Science. Entitle the e-mail “2010 Japan Society for Molecular Science Award Application”.
“Notification of acceptance” will be sent back to the applicant by email. If the “Notification” does not reach the applicant after a few hours, then please inquire with our help desk (bunshi-kensyo-desk@bunken.co.jp).

4. Deadline
June 7, 2010 (same as the application deadline for presentation).

5. Selection
Awardees are selected in a two-stage selection process. Applicants will be notified of the result of the first-stage selection, which is based on the documents submitted, by the end of August 2010. Interviews for the second-stage selection (8 minute presentation and 10 minute discussion) will be held on Monday, September 13, the day before the start of the Annual Meeting starts. Details of the interview, such as the venue and time, will be advised later. Please note that the Society will not cover the travel expenses for the interview. Applicants may be asked to submit additional material for the second-stage selection.

6. Announcement
Awards will be announced at the General Meeting of the Japan Society for Molecular Science during the Annual Meeting.

7. Invited talk by awardees
JSMolSci requests award winners to give an invited talk at the Annual Meeting of the Japan Society for Molecular Science the year following their award.
